Page Contents
ToggleCacti and succulents are among the suitable plants for terrariums that are widely used. The most important point to consider is that excessive moisture can cause cacti and succulents to rot and deteriorate. Therefore, a covered terrarium is not suitable for cultivating cacti and succulents, and they should be planted in uncovered containers and watered only once a month. Another important point is that the plants grown together must have similar light and watering needs.
Friendship Plant (Pilea)
This beautiful plant is often grown in moist locations and prefers shade. The size of this plant is suitable for planting in any size of terrarium. Pilea, an apartment plant, has very beautiful leaves that create a beautiful contrast with the shiny green leaves and white veins. The care conditions for Pilea are very simple, and you can easily plant a cutting of it in a glass container and give it as a gift to your friends.
Spider Plant (Chlorophytum comosum)
In addition to its beauty, this plant is also on the list of air-purifying plants. Spider plants come in two varieties: green and variegated. The variegated type, with its bright striped leaves, can create a beautiful contrast with other plants. This plant tolerates low light well and prefers humidity, so it’s important to water it before the soil dries out.
Cryptanthus (Starfish Plant)
This plant, belonging to the pineapple family, has ribbon-like and strap-like leaves that change color from red to white and dark green depending on the amount of light they receive. It has slow growth, making it suitable for a fixed-size glass container.
Fittonia is among the long-lived houseplants and thrives well in warm and humid environments. Its leaves have beautiful veins with colors ranging from white, green, to red. This plant is sensitive to watering and humidity, becoming limp(lethargic) when thirsty and quickly returning to its original state after watering. This change in appearance has made Fittonia an interesting plant.
Peperomia Caperata
With its prominently patterned leaves, this plant is suitable for terrariums as it enjoys humidity and requires low light. Sometimes when removing Peperomia from the pot, you’ll notice it consists of multiple shoots, and you can separate these shoots and plant each one separately. However, it’s good to know that Peperomia comes in various varieties.
Tillandsia
Tillandsia is an epiphytic(aerobic) plant species that doesn’t require soil and obtains its necessary nutrients from the air through its leaves. This plant is highly suitable for terrariums due to its resilience.
Black Mondo Grass (Ophiopogon planiscapus)
Black Mondo Grass is one of the suitable plants for terrariums, characterized by its strap-like leaves in dark green to black shades. With an adult height of around 40 centimeters, it is suitable for larger terrariums. It requires sufficient humidity inside the terrarium and does not need misting.
Strawberry Begonia (Saxifraga stolonifera)
This delightful plant with a long lifespan is one of the suitable flowers for terrariums. It features trailing stems with red-colored flowers, earning it the nickname “Strawberry Begonia.” Even when not in bloom, the beautiful leaves of this plant will adorn your terrarium.
Baby’s Tears (Soleirolia soleirolii)
You may know this plant as terrarium grass, but its name is Baby’s Tears. You can use this plant to cover empty surfaces of the terrarium along with decorative stones and small sculptures.
